The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has reassured the public that President Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, and other members of the national executive are under strict and capable protection following a shooting incident involving the Deputy President’s convoy.
In a public statement issued this week, General Masemola said that members of the Presidential Protection Service (PPS) assigned to the country’s top leadership are highly trained and possess the expertise to avert any threat.
“The executive of the country, including the President and the Deputy President, are in safe hands,” said Masemola. “Resources assigned to safeguard them are adequate and tailored to detect and neutralize imminent threats.”
Shooting Incident Under Investigation
The announcement comes after SAPS confirmed that a shooting incident occurred involving the Deputy President’s convoy. While no further public details have been provided, General Masemola said an extensive investigation is underway, with ballistics analysis concluded and Crime Intelligence conducting continuous risk assessments.
To ensure heightened safety, security detail for both the President and Deputy President has been reinforced. The Commissioner also expressed confidence in the professionalism of PPS members and their dedicated approach to safeguarding national leaders.
Although the specifics of executive security are generally confidential, SAPS found it necessary to address public concern and misinformation surrounding the recent event.
“A high-level team has been appointed to probe the case,” added Masemola.
