The Matatiele community is in mourning following the tragic death of Sisonke Mbolekwa, a student from Tsepisong village, who lost his life during a protest at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Mthatha on 15 April 2025.
Sisonke, described as a dedicated and hardworking student with a promising future, was caught in the violent unrest that unfolded on campus. His death has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an outpouring of grief and condemnation.
In a show of support, Acting Mayor Councillor Thembeka Dyantyi led a delegation of councillors and community leaders to visit the Mbolekwa family home in Tsepisong. There, they offered heartfelt condolences and solidarity during this painful period.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mbolekwa family during this painful and difficult time,” said Acting Mayor Dyantyi. “This senseless act of violence has taken a promising future from us all and left a lasting wound in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.”
The Matatiele Local Municipality has strongly condemned the violence that led to the death, expressing concern over the increasing volatility of student protests across institutions. The municipality pledged its support to both the Mbolekwa family and the student community of Walter Sisulu University.
The incident comes amid growing calls for accountability and improved communication between university management and students. Investigations into the events surrounding the protest and subsequent loss of life are expected to continue.
