The Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr. Mzwanele Nyhontso, is set to officially hand over a land title deed to the Fiva Legacy Communal Property Association (CPA) on Saturday, 5 April 2025, in Matatiele, Eastern Cape. The handover will take place at Siphephetho Junior Secondary School in Fiva village at 11:00.
This landmark event represents the second phase of a settled land claim by the Fiva community, who were dispossessed of their land under the oppressive Native Administration Act of 1927, later renamed the Black Administration Act. The community has already received financial compensation as part of the first phase of the claim.
Now, through the efforts of the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights within the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), 1,143.99 hectares of land will be restored to approximately 360 beneficiaries, including 47 female-headed households.
The handover is especially significant as it forms part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Restitution of Land Rights Act (Act No. 22 of 1994). It aims not only to acknowledge progress in land restitution but also to engage and inform beneficiaries and the broader public on the socio-economic impact of land reform in South Africa.
Minister Nyhontso’s participation in the ceremony underscores government’s continued commitment to addressing historical injustices and creating a more equitable land ownership landscape.
