The tragic case of a seven-year-old girl, referred to as “Cwecwe,” who was allegedly raped at Bergview College in Matatiele, has ignited a nationwide outcry, with various political entities and civil society organizations demanding swift justice and enhanced safety measures in schools.

United Democratic Movement (UDM) Eastern Cape’s Response

The UDM in the Eastern Cape has expressed profound outrage over the incident, emphasizing the urgency of apprehending and prosecuting those responsible. Bulelani Bobotyane, the Provincial Secretary of the UDM, stated, “We demand urgent action from the South African Police Service (SAPS) to expedite the investigation and ensure that justice is served.” The party also commended the Department of Education’s decision to deregister Bergview College but stressed that this action is merely a starting point in addressing the deeper crisis within educational institutions.

School Deregistration and Legal Proceedings

In response to the school’s management refusing to cooperate with the investigation, the Eastern Cape Education Department has deregistered Bergview College. This decisive action underscores the department’s commitment to ensuring that educational institutions adhere to legal and ethical standards, particularly in safeguarding students.

Public Demonstrations and Civil Society Involvement

The case has sparked public demonstrations, with protesters demanding justice for Cwecwe and highlighting broader concerns about child safety in schools. In Johannesburg, close to 100 individuals marched to call attention to the case, reflecting a collective demand for accountability and systemic change.

Continued Advocacy and Support

Civil society organizations and political groups continue to rally support for Cwecwe and her family, advocating for comprehensive reviews of safety policies in schools and the provision of psychological and social support to victims of such traumatic incidents. The collective response underscores a national commitment to ensuring that educational institutions are safe havens for all children.
