The Umzimvubu Local Municipality has successfully completed the construction of the Gugwini Community Hall, a project aimed at promoting community development and social cohesion. The hall was built at a cost of R2,924,000 and created employment opportunities for 19 local residents.
Mayor Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu, accompanied by Exco members and community leaders, conducted an oversight visit to the hall to assess its completion. The mayor praised the project steering committee (PSC) for their hard work and dedication to completing the project.
“As the government, our primary focus is to deliver services to our communities,” said Mayor Ndevu. “We set a target of constructing 28 community halls during our term of office, and despite financial challenges, we remain committed to achieving this goal.”
The Gugwini Community Hall is a 242-square-meter facility that features facebrick exterior, fencing for security, and toilets catering to males, females, and people with disabilities. Project manager Xolisa Yakobi from the Housing Department under Infrastructure and Planning highlighted the collaborative effort between the PSC and the contractor.
Mncedisi Tshekela, a resident of Ward 3 and PSC member, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s completion, noting that the community was kept informed throughout the construction process. He also appreciated the job opportunities created for local residents, despite being temporary.
The chief of the Gugwini community hall expressed her gratitude for the new facility, paying tribute to past community leaders. Cllr Garhane emphasized that the community hall is now in the hands of the community and will be officially opened by the municipality in due course.
The completion of the Gugwini Community Hall demonstrates the Umzimvubu Local Municipality’s commitment to delivering infrastructure projects that benefit local communities and promote social development.
