Eskom has reached a significant milestone, achieving 282 consecutive days without implementing loadshedding since March 26, 2024. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the structural improvements in generation performance, thanks to the investment in the Generation Recovery Plan and enhanced maintenance protocols.

Key Highlights

  • Diesel savings: Eskom has achieved year-to-date diesel savings of R16.52 billion, a significant reduction of 65.2% compared to the same period last year.
  • Unplanned outages: Unplanned outages remain on a downward trend at approximately 8.1%, compared to the same period last year.
  • Koeberg Nuclear Power Station: Unit 2 has successfully returned to the national grid after extensive upgrades, with a capacity of 930MW. The unit is expected to reach full load by mid-January 2025.
  • Energy Availability Factor (EAF): The year-to-date EAF is at 62.17%, a significant improvement of approximately 7.0% compared to the same period last year.

Eskom’s Summer Outlook Remains Positive

In August 2024, Eskom predicted a likely scenario of a loadshedding-free summer due to structural generation improvements. This outlook remains unchanged, with the utility confident in its ability to meet electricity demand.

Ongoing Planned Maintenance

Eskom’s ongoing planned maintenance is aligned with its summer maintenance strategy, aimed at improving the reliability of its generation fleet. The utility has utilized the December summer break to increase planned maintenance activities, with an average of over 8,000MW of planned maintenance in December.
