The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) has taken a significant step towards boosting the local textile industry, donating industrial sewing machines to seven clothing and textile cooperatives in the Beyers Naude Local Municipality. This R2.2 million investment is set to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and empower small businesses in rural areas.
Maralese Nonkonana, owner of, expressed her gratitude, stating that the two brand-new sewing machines received will enable her business to expand production and secure government contracts.
“These machines will take our business to the next level, allowing us to produce more clothing items and hopefully get more clients now, including government departments,” Nonkonana said.
This initiative is part of DRDAR’s ongoing efforts to support farmers and small businesses, previously demonstrated through initiatives such as increasing fodder production and cannabis industrial business operations. The department aims to foster vibrant, equitable, and sustainable rural communities.
With this investment, DRDAR MEC Nonceba Nkontsiwe encouraged beneficiaries to strive for sustainability and commercial success.
“Don’t rely solely on government support. Aim to open your own shops or supply commercial clothing retail stores,” Nkontsiwe said.
The DRDAR’s commitment to economic growth and job creation is evident in their support of 976 clothing and textile cooperatives, benefiting 4,234 individuals, with over R25 million invested in industrial machines and materials since 2017.
