KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Taxi Violence detectives are appealing for public assistance to locate Mpiyakhe Thobani Mbatha (25), wanted in connection with the murder of Mphilisi Ngubane, chairperson of the Fredville Taxi Association, and the attempted murder of his twin brother.
According to reports, on September 13, 2024, the Ngubane twins were traveling on Shezi Main Road in Mpumalanga township when they were ambushed by three men in a brown VW Polo. The attackers opened fire, killing 35-year-old Mphilisi. His twin brother narrowly escaped.
Following the attack, murder and attempted murder charges were filed at Mpumalanga police station, with the case transferred to Provincial Taxi Violence for further investigation. The investigation led authorities to identify Mbatha as a key suspect, though his current whereabouts remain unknown. Originally from Greytown, Mbatha is also believed to have ties to the Inchanga area.
A warrant for Mbatha’s arrest has been issued by the Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court. Police urge anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Sergeant Khuyana at 079 490 8250 / 031 325 6393, or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via the MySAPS App.
