Eastern Cape Crime Stats Released: Police Confiscate 747 Firearms, Over 35,000 Arrests Made

The Eastern Cape’s crime statistics for the first six months of 2024 were released by the MEC for Community Safety, Mr. Xolile Nqatha, alongside Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, during a briefing at the NU 10 Community Hall in Mdantsane on 3 October 2024.

The crime stats revealed that between January and June, police confiscated 747 unlicensed firearms across the province, while 35,194 suspects were arrested for various crimes. These efforts represent a significant step forward in reducing crime and improving safety in the region.

During the announcement, Lt Gen Mene also introduced a key appointment designed to enhance police operations in the Eastern Cape. Colonel Ruby Niewoudt was promoted to the rank of Brigadier and will serve as the Provincial Head for Operations (ORS). The appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen service delivery and bolster law enforcement capabilities.

MEC Nqatha and Lt Gen Mene emphasized their commitment to further improving safety and security in the Eastern Cape, with Lt Gen Mene stating that the province remains focused on tackling crime head-on and ensuring that communities are safer.

This report comes amid ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address crime challenges in the Eastern Cape and ensure better service delivery to the public. The confiscation of firearms and significant number of arrests made in the first half of the year is viewed as a testament to the police’s dedication to keeping the province secure.
