Being a mother is a unique and rewarding experience. It involves unconditional love, sacrifice, and endless dedication to the well-being and growth of a child. Mothers play a crucial role in shaping the future generation and are often the pillars of strength and support in a family. Motherhood is a beautiful journey filled with challenges, joy, and fulfillment.
There was a song we used to sing as children for Mother’s Day.Â
- M – is for the million things she gave me.
- O – is that she is only growing old
- T – is for the things she said she would save me
- H – is for her heart as pure as gold
- E – is for her eyes so bright and shiny
- R – is that she is right as right can be. Put them all together they spell MOTHER. The word that means the world to me.
I couldn’t for a minute understand the magnitude of those words that I was singing in church, at school and around the Sunday lunch table on Mother’s Day. I figure I was about the same age now as my mom would have been at that time. As a mother now, I am fighting everything that is growing old and with that the wisdom in the lyrics of that little special song.  I can only hope and pray my sons see that I have tried to give them everything and that I will continue to do it a million times over. Even though I am growing old, the life I see is filled with the best years because I had the gift of motherhood. And the special memories are the things I have saved over the years. That they see my heart as gold as they now take that wealth into their adult lives. Even though my eyes have lost their lustre with the demands of daily life, I hold onto the fact that they know and feel whenever I look at them, my eyes are bright and shiny. I know they may not see me as right in everything I do and say. I am certain that this is not the case, even though I try to make the right choices for them in every way.  If anything, I remember, that when I was singing this song to my Mom, I may have said she was right, yet certainly did not show her so, just like every emo preteen, I did not see that as the case.
However, in any way, we look at it the relationship between a mother and a child is without, a doubt the most beautiful and purest form of love that means the world to any mom who has had the gift of motherhood.
Mothers are said to be the heart of God. I’d like to believe that. Just as I chose to believe that when God created the world, He made everything functional and purposeful, yet when He looked at Adam and all He created He realised that His creation was incomplete. That his heart and character were missing in His creation. So He created Eve. Eve completed creation. With her came life and the multiplication of human life. And motherhood was born. The heart of God. I read somewhere that said that when a woman conceives she sacrifices her entire self and gives up her body and being, to GROW another human being inside her. When a woman is pregnant, she is creating and moulding life. That vast unimaginable, unbelievable, unfathomable gift of being part of a growing life inside of you is one of the greatest accomplishments I have had the honour of accomplishing.
So from a mother to her child/ren I say, thank you for the greatest relationship I have had the privilege of sharing and being a part of. Thank you for making my heart as pure as gold, as my heart is a reflection of you. Thank you for the sparkle in my eyes as they reflect the glittering gold you are to me. Thank you for the million gifts you give me with every hug, touch and smile you reflect onto me daily. Thank you for choosing me every day as I work to be a reflection of the love God has for you.
As a child, I thank you Mom for all and everything you are to me and your grandchildren. Thank you for being right with every NO. Thank you for reminding me of the value of my life with every cautionary hug and directing look you silently shared. Thank you for showing me a million times over, that God loves me and chose me, just as you chose to give me life. Thank you for the sacrifice for your life especially when you look back and consider the golden years. Your crown of silver is my crowning glory for a life that is cherished and loved.
