Project Owethu has made a significant impact in the rural village of Ntlavukazi, located under the Ngquza Hill Local Municipality, by providing essential aid and fostering a renewed sense of unity. Partnering with Gift of the Givers Foundation, O.R. Tambo District Municipality, and the Central Methodist Church, the initiative is tackling poverty, discrimination, and lack of access to services.

Here are 7 ways Project Owethu is restoring hope in rural Eastern Cape communities:

1. Delivering essential supplies

Families in Ntlavukazi received food, hygiene packs, and emergency relief items, providing immediate support for those struggling with daily necessities.

2. Promoting anti-discrimination values

At its core, Project Owethu challenges the systemic discrimination faced by Black communities, aiming to restore dignity and fairness.

3. Inspiring community spirit

Local leaders and residents gathered to welcome the initiative, with Civita, a former mine worker, noting:

“It’s encouraging to see leaders from different sectors showing up for us. I’m especially hopeful now because of what Project Owethu stands for.”

4. Partnering with key institutions

The collaboration with Gift of the Givers, SAMHS, and faith-based groups ensures a holistic approach to community upliftment.

5. Empowering young people

Through school visits and career guidance programs, the project is giving students and high school graduates tools to shape their futures.

6. Strengthening local government support

Ngquza Hill Mayor, Cllr N. Pepping, praised the combined effort of various government departments, saying:

“When government, police, Home Affairs, SASSA, and Social Development all come together like this, real change becomes possible.”

7. Expanding the vision nationwide

Project Owethu aims to scale its work to other provinces, ensuring no community is left behind in its mission to create equitable opportunities.

For the people of Ntlavukazi, this outreach was more than an aid drop-off — it was a reminder that “help is no longer out of reach.”
