This year, 75,647 candidates are gearing up for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams in the Western Cape, kicking off on Monday, October 21. Students will tackle a total of 123 examination papers before the exams conclude on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
Among the candidates, there are 64,375 full-time students and 11,272 part-time learners, marking an increase of 270 full-time applicants from the previous year. One of the highlights of this year’s exams is that 66,988 students will take either English Home Language, First Additional Language, or Second Additional Language during the morning sessions.
Mathematical Literacy remains the most popular subject, with 51,932 candidates scheduled to write Paper 1 on November 1 and Paper 2 on November 4. Interestingly, some subjects have only one candidate, notably Hebrew Second Additional Language and a few others.
The exams will be hosted across 474 locations, overseen by 1,809 invigilators to ensure a smooth and fair process. Following the exams, from December 2 to December 12, about 920,000 scripts will be marked by 4,232 markers and verified by 1,046 mark-checkers.
The results will be announced nationally on January 15, 2025, with candidates able to check their individual scores online or at their schools starting January 16. MEC David Maynier praised the diligent efforts of the Western Cape Education Department staff in preparing for these crucial exams.
