Why the crackdown happened

The arrests took place during a targeted RTI operation in Winklespruit, south of Durban. The campaign, branded #NenzaniLaEzweni, focuses on improving road compliance and reducing fatal crashes.

“Many people could have died last night and this morning. But RTI moved in swiftly and prevented carnage,” said MEC Duma.

What happens next?

The Department of Transport has not yet released details on charges or court dates. Further updates are expected as investigations continue.

The province has increased traffic enforcement as part of January safety operations.
