A 15-year-old learner has been arrested in KwaMhlanga after allegedly stabbing and killing a 17-year-old schoolmate on 14 August 2025.

Police responded to a report of a stabbing and found the victim lying on his back with a stab wound to the left side of his chest. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived on the scene and certified the learner dead.

According to police, the incident began as a fight between two learners after school, near the school gate. The confrontation continued into a nearby street, where the suspect allegedly drew a knife and stabbed the victim before fleeing. The suspect was later traced to his home and arrested. The murder weapon was recovered from a friend of the suspect, who was also taken in for questioning.

A murder case is under investigation, and the suspect is expected to appear in court after being assessed by a probation officer.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrest but expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as heartbreaking. He urged parents, schools, and communities to work together to address the root causes of youth violence, stressing that learners should focus on education rather than violence
